Message from the Chapter Secretary, Dr Maloba Wekesa on the progress of the agreement on University reforms.

On 24th Feb. 2022, UASU officials met the Vice Chancellor in a follow up meeting on the progress of our agreement on University reforms.

The following issues formed the basis of this meeting:

  1. Elections of Deans
  2. Promotions & appointments
  3. Health issues at UHC
  4. Defrayment of DSP to Fees
  5. CBA Arrears
  6. Internal CBA
On the first item, a program of elections was being drawn out by the DVC AA given that student elections are also ongoing. This is to ensure a seamless timetable that should not interfere with University operations.
On the second item, we negotiated and agreed with the VC who signed a consent for the administrative processing of staff who are TFs with PhDs to be promoted forthwith to lecturer position. The HR director should be giving out a circular on the same. Other promotions due are to be activated immediately as directed to the HR division.
On the third item, student’s drugs procurement had taken precedence but more drugs especially targeting management ailments have gone through all stages of procurement and should be in stock.
On the fourth item, the joint committee (UASU & UoN Mgnt) dealing with the defrayment of DSP to fees had met thrice with UoN management and concluded the framework of this process. This framework was adopted by the University Executive Board yesterday.
On the fifth item, the balance of Capitation from Treasury is yet to be sent to the University for Full Implementation of the 2017/21 CBA. UASU National Office has managed to push the Government to factor it in the supplementary budget as additional money to fund the final phase of the 2017/2021 CBA.
On the last item, the Chapters proposal for the Internal 2017/2021 CBA has been sent to SRC for their input as required for CBA negotiations.
We will continue to engage with University Management and report to you on progress on other matters outstanding.
    Thank you.
    Dr Maloba Wekesa
Chapter Secretary – UASU – UoN
